SAFETY CHECKLIST
Your safety is important all year round but during peak trading periods like Christmas your employer should ensure they’re keeping you safe.
Here’s a list of things employers should put in place to prevent abusive customer behaviour and support you if an incident happens.
ENVIRONMENTAL
For your safety in store
- Adequate lighting for visibility & safety
- Noise controls for comfort and awareness
- Temperature controls for comfort
- Plexiglass screens and other barriers
- Adequate staffing levels
- Clear/accessible aisles
- Well marked and designed queuing to avoid confusion and overcrowding
- Clear signage for aisles/products/pricing/stock availability
- Visible security cameras
- Security staff
COMMUNICATING “ZERO' TOLERANCE OF ABUSE
- Clear messaging to customers that abuse will not be tolerated
- Customer Signage – promoting zero tolerance
- Store PA messaging – reminding customers to respect Badges/underbadges – for staff to wear
- Terms and conditions of entry – including for behaviour
- Promote the SDA’s No One Deserves A Serve campaign
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
To help workers deal with incidents and report them
- Zero tolerance policy towards abuse and violence from customers
- Reporting processes for staff
- Procedures to deal with bad behaviour
- Procedures to remove and ban serious or repeat offenders
- Post-incident support systems
TRAINING
