Increases to Casual Weekend Penalty Rates Secured for Hair & Beauty

Great news! After a long campaign, the SDA has managed to secure a casual loading on weekends for hair and beauty workers.

This loading will be paid on Saturdays and Sundays for workers who are casually employed.

The casual loading is paid to casual workers in lieu of entitlements such as personal leave, annual leave and set rosters that their permanent and part time co-workers receive.

The increases will be phased in over the next two years and will see weekend rates for casuals improve to 225% on Sunday and 158% on Saturdays by December 2023.

The increases are as follows:

Date Increase
31 January 2022 5% increase
30 April 2022 5% increase (10% higher than current rate)
31 December 2022 5% increase (15% higher than current rate)
30 April 2023 5% increase (20% higher than current rate)
31 December 2023 5% increase (25% higher than the current rate)

As a result of the SDA’s campaign and submissions to the Fair Work Commission, casual workers in the hair and beauty industry will now take home more money for working weekend shifts.

The SDA will always fight to protect the rights and entitlements of workers in the hair and beauty industry.

If you have any questions about the new casual loading on weekends or any other issue at work, please contact the SDA.
